The Story of Bols goes as far back as the year 1575, when Lucas Bols set up a small distillery on the outskirts of Amsterdam. The Netherlands was on the threshold of its Golden Age and Amsterdam was rapidly becoming the centre of World trade and enterprise.
From all corners of the world spices and herbs were brought to Amsterdam. Lucas Bols used them to create the fine liqueurs that were to make him famous in the following decades.
Around 1612 the company became enclosed in the city walls of Amsterdam. His son Jacob Bols, built a new distillery to replace his fathers old shed. The façade of this building now stands on the premises of Bols Distilleries in Zoetermeer, near Amsterdam.
For centuries the company and all its secret recipes were passed on from father to son. However, in 1816 the direct bloodline in the Bols dynasty died out and the family sold the company. They had one important condition: the name Bols was to forever remain connected with the distillery.
