Botanist Islay Dry Gin
Botanist Islay Dry Gin has been crafted by the experts at Bruichladdich. With a total of 31 botanicals, 22 native to the island and 9 others, this is a gin like no other. Its floral aromatics and rich texture are heavily influenced (unexpectedly so) by being distilled in the one and only Lomond still, Ugly Betty. This experimental still, specially adapted for the purpose, runs at an extraordinarily low pressure; it just simmers, taking three times as long to distil this Botanist Islay Dry Gin as it takes for the whisky.
There is perhaps an historical relevance to this spirit. Before the days of venerable, dark, cask-matured single malts, clandestine distillers of the past would often flavour their illicit, clear spirit - uisgebaugh - with hillside plants in an attempt to improve the flavour. One plant used was juniper, the major constituent of gin, which grows widely on Islay. The spirit distilled by these keen amateur distillers probably tasted more like gin than whisky, as we know it.
Imagine that: the world famous Scottish spirit whose name is derived from the sound of the Gaelic uisge meaning water, as in uisgebaugh (water-of-life), might have really been gin.
This is one for a special occasion or treat.
