It all started in 1883 when Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, founder of this winery, brought back to Chile the most exclusive grape vines from the Bordeaux region of France. These varieties developed extraordinarily well in the fertile Maipo Valley soil, achieving unexpectedly good results. Aware of just how good his wine was, Don Melchor de Concha y Toro decided to set some of the best wines aside for himself.
After some time Don Melchor de Concha y Toro realised his best stock was disappearing and came to the conclusion the locals were stealing it from him.
As the locals were very superstitious Don Melchor de Concha y Toro spread a rumour that the devil lived in the cellar and the stealing stopped instantly and to this day the legend still exists and is still one of the most famous cellars in the world - Casillero del Diablo.
