Eugene Mercier founded his own champagne house in 1858 at the tender age of twenty. He had set himself the ambitious goal of bringing high quality champagne to the general public.Eugene Mercier had a stock answer for the inevitable sceptics. You can laugh, but the day will come when rivers of champagne will flow through Epernay.
Some ten years later he was proved right. In 1871 he began work on expanding the site with the construction of spectacular cellars. The 18 kilometres of tunnels were well ahead of their time, stretching across a single level and offering direct access to the Paris-Strasbourg railway line.
In the same year, he ordered the construction of a giant vat to enable large scale assemblage. It would take 16 years of arduous effort to build this veritable champagne cathedral with a capacity of 1600 hectolitres or the equivalent of 200,000 bottle.
Eugene Mercier led the way again in 1886 by installing an extraordinary steam powered machine in the cellars to generate electrical lighting and to power machines which were totally new to the champagne region, such as electric bottle rinsers and sorting machines.Eugene Mercier was a larger than life pioneer whose spectacular innovations were to mark his era.
